Brisbane residents enjoy a pleasant sub-tropical climate with hot, humid summers and mild winters, making the city and the surrounding regions very appealing to both locals and holiday makers. In summer, the average temperature ranges from about 22C to 30C, while in winter temperatures range from 12C to about 23C.
The city centre is a unique blend of old and new. At Brisbane’s heart, beautifully restored sandstone buildings and colonial architecture provide a charming backdrop to the range of modern skyscrapers. One of the more appealing features of the city is that it clusters around the loops of the Brisbane River, which has earned it the name “the river city”.
Brisbane is best known for its relaxed lifestyle, with an emphasis on outdoor living. In both the city centre and in the many surrounding suburbs, there are many shopping and dining districts where a broad range of restaurants and cafes can be found, many of them featuring alfresco dining. Brisbane’s suburbs are often leafy and sometimes very hilly. Many locals live in traditional style houses, in particular the timber “Queenslander” and “colonial” styles of architecture, which are often built on stilts or “stumps” and feature metal sheet roofing and open decks for outdoor entertaining. In the further out suburbs, large blocks of land and even acreage is common.
No matter what your interests, you’ll find a wealth of things to do in Brisbane. And, if you want to get out of the city and explore the surrounding areas, you’ll find that you are within about an hour’s drive of some of Australia’s most beautiful beaches and character-filled small towns. Drive north to the beautiful Sunshine Coast, south to the Gold Coast, or into the coastal hinterland to see some breathtaking rainforests and mountains.
In addition to the nearby coastal beaches, Brisbane has it’s own “seaside” suburbs surrounding the beautiful Moreton Bay region, which is home to a number of inhabited islands, including the lovely North Stradbroke and Moreton Islands.
Moreton Bay’s pristine waters are an ecologically significant marine park, which includes 40 nautical wrecks, hard coral quays, ravines and drop outs, providing great diving opportunities in Australia. In addition to some 1200 species of fish, the marine park’s environment is home to dolphins, turtles
and dugongs.
